Sept. 13 (UPI) – In preparation for the winter season, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is advising all Americans, including those as young as 6 months old, to receive the updated COVID-19 booster shot, which will be available later this week. This recommendation from the CDC aims to protect individuals from severe illness caused by COVID-19 and to reduce the risk of developing Long COVID.
The updated Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines will be released soon, according to the CDC. The CDC emphasizes that vaccination remains the best defense against COVID-19-related death and hospitalization.
“If you have not received a COVID-19 vaccine in the past 2 months, get an updated COVID-19 vaccine to protect yourself this fall and winter,” stated the CDC in its official announcement on Tuesday. This statement coincides with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s recent approval of the updated shot, declaring confidence in its safety and effectiveness. The FDA’s benefit-risk assessment confirms that the benefits of these vaccines outweigh their risks for individuals aged 6 months and older.
President Joe Biden commented on the significance of this announcement, calling it “another important milestone” in the battle against the virus. With the current availability of various tools and systems, including vaccines, at-home tests, and treatments, President Biden urges all Americans to stay up-to-date with their vaccines.
The CDC emphasizes that this winter season is the first time vaccines are available for COVID-19, RSV, and the flu – the three leading causes of hospitalizations. Moreover, the updated COVID-19 shots will be free for most Americans, as their health insurance plans will typically cover the cost. Individuals without health insurance or plans that do not cover the booster shot can access free vaccines through facilities participating in the CDC’s Bridge Access Program.
