Closure of Train Station Ticket Offices

In a significant development, the Rail Delivery Group (RDG) has announced the closure of almost all railway station ticket offices, reallocating staff to perform duties on the station platforms and concourses. Only the busiest stations will continue to operate ticket office facilities.

Passengers will be informed about the potential closures through posters displayed at the stations. The final decision on which ticket offices will be closed will be made by the Government after undergoing a consultation process. The closure of these offices is expected to take place gradually over a span of three years.

Reasons Behind Aslef’s Strike

The members of Aslef are engaging in industrial action to demand a pay increase.

The union has criticized the government for not satisfying its negotiation team, consisting of general secretary Mick Whelan, assistant general secretary Simon Weller, and executive committee president Dave Calfe.

The representatives of the employers, the Rail Delivery Group, last met the union in April, following the outlined post-pandemic framework of the Rail Industry Recovery Group.

Mr Whelan expressed his frustration by saying, “Do you remember Where’s Wally? Well, what we want to know is Where’s Harper? We last saw the Secretary of State for Transport in December. We last saw Huw Merriman, the Rail Minister, in January. And we last saw the train companies in April. Since then, nothing. Nada. Zilch. Not a letter, not an email, not a text message, not a phone call, not a WhatsApp. Not a word!”
