Dr. Allison Arwady, the commissioner of the Chicago Department of Public Health and leader of the city’s COVID-19 response, was fired on Friday by Mayor Brandon Johnson.
Johnson, a former union organizer, assumed the mayoral position in May, replacing the widely unpopular Lori Lightfoot.
Arwady had faced resistance from Chicago’s teachers’ union when she advocated for reopening schools in February 2021. During his mayoral campaign, Johnson had pledged to dismiss her if elected.
Although he later softened his stance, stating that he would meet with Arwady before making a decision, Johnson expressed disapproval of her push to reopen Chicago Public Schools amid concerns about pandemic safety.
