July 15 (UPI) — South Korea’s authorities reported that the heavy rains and landslides have claimed the lives of at least 22 people and forced thousands to evacuate their homes. The disaster has resulted in over 4,700 individuals seeking temporary shelter, and sadly, 14 people are still missing.

In addition to the loss of life, the calamity has caused power outages in 13 cities and counties, as well as the evacuation of 6,400 individuals due to the overflow of Goesan Dam.

The torrential rainfall and mudslides destroyed numerous roadways and submerged at least 26 homes. The consequences of the disaster were not limited to land, as a train in Cheongju derailed due to a mudslide, causing minor injuries to the engine driver. Train services, including the KTX bullet train, were suspended in South Korea’s central region, although some limited services have now been restored. Moreover, the South Korean authorities are striving to determine the fate of the people in 19 vehicles trapped in an underground roadway in Osong. Tragically, one fatality has been confirmed, and only nine individuals have been rescued so far.

The majority of the reported deaths have occurred in and around North Gyeongsang province, primarily due to landslides. Meanwhile, Japan has also been battling heavy rainfall, resulting in multiple rivers breaching their banks and the issuance of landslide warnings in several regions. Train services have been suspended in affected areas. The Akita Prefecture in particular has experienced severe rainfall, leading to an emergency alert for the partially submerged cities of Noshiro and Akita. Japanese authorities have reported at least four injuries as a result of the ongoing disaster.
