‘Snow White’ Fans Divided by Rachel Zegler’s Love Angle, Sparks Controversy

  • Actress Rachel Zegler, known for her role in “Snow White,” is facing backlash for her comments about the upcoming film.
  • In various interviews, Zegler, who plays the lead character, has expressed her lack of enthusiasm for the Disney princess.
  • A TikTok user questioned her decision, stating, “If you dislike the original so much, why participate in the remake?”

Actress Rachel Zegler, who portrays the lead character in Disney’s upcoming “Snow White” remake, is facing criticism for her condescending remarks about the film.

Recently surfaced interview clips have revealed Zegler’s multiple statements expressing her dislike for the original Disney princess, sparking outrage across the internet.

In a December 2022 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Zegler confessed that she had only watched the original animated film once and did not enjoy it.

“I was scared of the original version. I think I watched it once and never picked it up again. I’m being so serious,” Zegler commented during the interview, which also included Gal Gadot, the actress playing the Evil Queen.

In a different interview from September 2022, Zegler demonstrated her disdain for the plot of the original animated film as it contradicted her perception of modern feminist values.

“I simply mean that we are no longer in 1937,” Zegler explained to Variety when asked about her statement regarding bringing a modern edge to the character.

“She won’t be saved by a prince and she won’t dream about true love,” Zegler added. “She dreams of becoming the leader she knows she can be, embodying the qualities her late father encouraged her to possess: fearlessness, fairness, bravery, and truth.”

In another interview with Extra TV, Zegler even described the prince from the original film as “a stalker,” implying that her co-star Andrew Burnap’s scenes as the Prince may be removed from the remake.

“The original cartoon was released in 1937, and it’s quite evident,” Zegler expressed in the interview. “There’s a strong focus on her romantic relationship with a guy who literally stalks her. Weird! So we’re not doing that this time.”

“We’re taking a different approach that might surprise people who assume it’s solely a love story because we cast a male actor in the movie,” Zegler continued in the Extra TV interview. “All of Andrew’s scenes could be cut, who knows? It’s Hollywood, baby!”

TikTok users have heavily criticized Zegler for her lack of appreciation towards a potentially life-changing role, calling out her pseudo-feminism.

In a viral video that has amassed over 9.2 million views since its upload, TikTok user Angie (@cosywithangie) criticized Zegler for failing to acknowledge that women have the right to pursue their desires, including love.

“Wanting to fall in love, get married, stay at home, be soft, and embrace domestic roles does not compromise one’s value as a person or a woman. It’s not anti-feminist,” Angie stated in her video, referencing Zegler’s Variety interview.

“Criticizing Disney princesses doesn’t make you a feminist. Not every woman aspires to be a leader or seeks power, and that’s perfectly acceptable,” Angie added in her video.

Angie’s TikTok video has been liked by more than 1.5 million viewers.

In another TikTok video by user @nuttybutter96, Zegler was called out for accepting the titular role despite disliking the character.

“If you despise the original so much, why would you want to be a part of the remake? Please explain,” the TikTok user wrote in their caption.

“I’ve never seen such a condescending and smug Disney princess in my life,” the user added in their video. “Zegler made it seem like women only matter if they hate love and are opposed to any form of romance. According to her, we’re only here to succeed and be leaders.”

The TikTok video has been viewed over 5.1 million times and received nearly 470,000 likes since its upload two days ago.

However, some fans have come to Zegler’s defense on social media. Twitter user Lottie (@waitforme_II) declared on the platform, “The hate towards Zegler is utterly ridiculous.”

“Merely expressing that Snow White has her own ambitions unrelated to romance doesn’t mean women being damsels in distress is feminist,” @waitforme_II wrote in a tweet that received 44 likes.

This is not the first time the Disney remake has sparked controversy. Earlier this year, photos from the set raised concerns as it appeared the film would exclude the seven dwarfs, leading many to criticize Disney for not casting actors from the dwarfism community.
