Irish singer Sinéad O’Connor, at the age of 56, has passed away as confirmed by her family on Wednesday.

Prior to her death, O’Connor, who was previously ordained as a Catholic priest, had converted to Islam and adopted the name Shuhada’ Sadaqat.

Now, let’s explore when and why the renowned star decided to embrace Islam.

O’Connor’s Religious Journey

During her teenage years, O’Connor spent time in a Roman Catholic Magdalene laundry, an institution for “fallen women,” which deeply influenced her perspective on the Catholic Church during her early career.

In 1992, during an appearance on “Saturday Night Live,” she caused controversy by tearing up a picture of Pope John Paul II, expressing her protest against child sex abuse within the church.

In 1999, she was ordained as a Catholic priest by a breakaway church in France, although the Catholic Church itself did not recognize the ceremony due to its prohibition on women becoming priests.

Following her ordination, O’Connor expressed a desire to be called Mother Bernadette Mary.

She later donated a significant sum of money to the bishop who ordained her and apologized for her previous actions towards the Pope, acknowledging it as an expression of frustration.

On March 26, 2010, O’Connor appeared on CNN to once again express her protest against sexual abuse in the Irish Catholic Church.

In an interview with The Guardian later that same year, she referred to the Vatican as “a nest of devils and a haven for criminals.”

She wrote an open letter to Pope Francis in August 2018, requesting excommunication as a Catholic priest and expressing her frustration with the lack of acknowledgment from the Vatican regarding her previous ordination.

Conversion to Islam

In October 2018, O’Connor declared via a now-deactivated Twitter account that she had converted to Islam.

She referred to this conversion as the natural culmination of her theological journey as an intelligent thinker.

Alongside renouncing her Catholicism, O’Connor chose the name Shuhada’ Davitt, which she later changed to Sadaqat.

In addition to her announcement, O’Connor shared a video of herself singing the adhan, the Islamic call to prayer.

During an interview on the Irish TV show “The Late Late Show” in September 2019, O’Connor revealed that she had always been a Muslim without realizing it, using the term “revert” to describe her discovery of Islam’s alignment with her beliefs.

In her search for the truth about God, O’Connor studied scriptures from various religions and found solace in Islam after reading just a chapter of the Quran.

On the news of O’Connor’s passing, fellow singer Cat Stevens, now known as Yusuf Islam, paid tribute and offered prayers for her eternal peace.
