Leadership within the Islamic State group, also known as ISIS, has been using the moniker “al-Qurayshi,” which refers to the tribe of Prophet Mohammed. Interestingly, the group has gone through four different leaders with this name since the beginning of last year. According to a recording on Telegram, the group’s spokesperson announced that Abu Hussein al-Husseini al-Qurayshi was killed in a battle against a rival militant group in northwest Syria. In April, the group denied Turkey’s claim that their intelligence agents had taken out the leader. The new leader, Abu Hafs al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi, was named but no additional information was provided.
The spokesperson revealed that Abu Hussein al-Husseini al-Qurayshi had been leading the group since the death of his predecessor in November of the previous year. He was “martyred” during an attempt by members of the al-Qaeda-linked group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham to detain him. The spokesperson added that other members of ISIS are currently in the custody of the rival group. Although ISIS is now a diminished version of its former self, controlling significantly less territory in Iraq and Syria, it still maintains a presence with thousands of fighters hiding in remote areas of both countries. The United States recently reported the killing of a high-ranking ISIS member in northwest Syria by their drones. (Read more about ISIS stories.)
