Sickness benefits crackdown postponed until after election

Approximately 450,000 individuals with less severe conditions receive lower benefits and coaching to assist them in returning to work. Mr. Stride acknowledged that the number could continue to increase until the changes take effect in 2025, stating, “We have around two and a half million individuals who are currently on long-term sick and disability benefits, and this number is growing.”

Nevertheless, in his article for The Telegraph, he argued that advancements in remote work and increased awareness of mental health have provided opportunities for individuals previously considered unable to work. “There are now significantly more options for flexible and remote work, and many employers have improved their accessibility and accommodations for employees,” he stated.

“Enhanced understanding of mental health conditions and neurodiversity has allowed employers to identify ways to modify job roles and accommodate disabled individuals and those with health conditions,” he added. “Many people on disability benefits express their desire to work, and with modern work practices, they could effectively manage their condition while being employed. However, they remain trapped in the benefits system without adequate support to prepare for work.”

This emphasis on enabling individuals with disabilities and health conditions to work from home is in contrast to the government’s broader efforts to encourage a return to the office.

The proposals focus on work capability assessments, which evaluate an individual’s fitness for employment when they are seeking welfare payments. The central idea is that certain conditions that previously exempted individuals from seeking work may no longer be valid.

One option is to deny extra support to individuals with these conditions, but they would still be entitled to the benefits provided to job seekers without health issues. Another option would assign less weight to these conditions in the assessment.

These proposals aim to reduce the number of individuals on sickness benefits who are not actively seeking employment, with the goal of reducing the group by hundreds of thousands.
