Thousands of Brits are advocating for a reduction in the legal driving age to 15, prompting the Government to take notice.

The Parliamentary petition has garnered over 86,900 signatures as of Tuesday morning, October 3rd.

The petition argues that the current law, which stipulates a minimum driving age of 17, is “unjust” and asserts that “15 and 16-year-olds are capable of handling a car responsibly.”

While teenagers can apply for a provisional license at the age of 15 and nine months, they must wait until they turn 16 to operate a moped or light quad bike and 17 to drive a car.

In addition, British citizens must reach the age of 17 before being eligible to book a theory and practical driving test for a car.

In the petition, initiated by Matteo Joseph Shirley, the demand is expressed as follows: “I strongly urge the Government to modify the legal driving age to 15, as I believe that teens aged 15 and 16 possess the necessary maturity to obtain a driver’s license.

“I firmly believe that the present circumstances are unjust and violate the Equality Act 2010.”

The ages of the petition’s supporters are unknown. However, the petition has seen significant support from areas such as Bradford West, Blackburn, and the Hodge Hill region of Birmingham.

If the petition garners over 10,000 signatures, the Government will be obliged to respond.

If it exceeds 100,000 signatures, the matter must be considered for debate in the Houses of Parliament.

Currently, no European country grants full supervised driving licenses for cars to individuals under the age of 16.
