A man captured on a Ring doorbell camera last year is now facing the consequences of his cruel actions towards a Labradoodle in an Anaheim apartment complex. The 34-year-old, identified as Albert Frank Abad Jr., recently pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of animal cruelty. As a result, he has been placed on one year of probation, according to authorities who made the announcement on Wednesday, Sept. 6.
Abad Jr. accepted a court offer from Orange County Superior Court Judge Justin Glenn-Leistikow, which reduced the charge from a felony. This decision allowed Abad Jr. to avoid serving jail time, shared Kimberly Edds, a spokesperson for the Orange County District Attorney’s Office. Prosecutors had originally sought a jail sentence.
While judges have the power to downgrade crimes from felonies to misdemeanors, Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer expressed his disagreement with Judge Glenn-Leistikow’s ruling. Spitzer described the decision as “shocking” and criticized the judge for giving leniency to someone who clearly demonstrated a lack of regard for the well-being of a vulnerable animal. Spitzer emphasized the unconditional love between a dog and its owner and expressed his disgust with betraying that trust.
The incident, which took place on September 15, 2022, gained significant attention after footage of the attack went viral. The video showed Abad approaching the Labradoodle, named Steeler, who was sitting near an exit door in the Gateway Apartment Homes on State College Boulevard. Abad then proceeded to swing at the dog, trapping it against the wall, and kicking it twice. He then leashed Steeler and forcefully dragged him down the hallway, delivering two more kicks.
Approximately a week later, Abad turned himself in to the Anaheim police and was promptly arrested. However, he was able to post bond and secure his release. Abad also decided to take Steeler to the Center Sinai Animal Hospital in Los Angeles, where he surrendered the dog to the staff. Steeler underwent a thorough examination by a veterinarian and fortunately did not sustain any permanent injuries.
Following the incident, Steeler was transferred to Orange County Animal Care and later placed with a nonprofit animal rescue organization located out-of-state, as confirmed by Edds.
