A recent report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reveals that nearly 18 million U.S. adults have been affected by long COVID-19, as of 2022. This insightful report highlights that approximately 6.9 percent of adults reported experiencing long COVID in the previous year’s National Health Interview Survey, with 3.4 percent currently suffering from it.
The report unveils significant disparities among individuals most likely to report having endured long COVID, including differences based on sex and sociodemographic characteristics.
Among these findings, it was discovered that women were more likely than men to report currently or previously having long COVID. In the 2022 survey, approximately 8.5 percent of women reported having ever experienced it, compared to only 5.2 percent of men. The disparity continues with 4.4 percent of women currently affected, while only 2.3 percent of men report the same.
Furthermore, the research indicates that individuals aged 35 to 49 have a higher likelihood of experiencing long COVID compared to other specified age groups. About 8.9 percent of adults aged 35-49 reported ever having had it, while the same was observed in around 6.9 percent of adults aged 18-34, 7.6 percent of adults aged 50-64, and 4.1 percent of adults aged 65 and older. A similar pattern was observed among the age groups regarding those who currently suffer from long COVID.
Regarding racial and ethnic demographics, Hispanic adults were found to be more likely, at 8.3 percent, to have experienced long COVID, compared to other groups. Non-Hispanic white adults were slightly above the average with 7.1 percent, while Black non-Hispanic adults were less likely at 5.4 percent. Asian non-Hispanic adults had the lowest percentage at 2.6 percent.
The survey defines long COVID as “self-reporting the presence of symptoms for at least 3 months after having COVID-19 among those who reported either a positive test or doctor’s diagnosis of COVID-19.”
