Shocking: Over 11,000 Participants Caught Cheating in Mexico City Marathon

This year’s Mexico City Marathon was a phenomenon of dishonesty and deception, resulting in disqualification for more than a third of the 30,000 participants, as reported by the renowned Spanish sports newspaper Marca. Marca has revealed that tracking data exposed 11,000 runners who failed to pass checkpoints strategically located every 3.1 miles along the course. Shockingly, some runners allegedly resorted to using private vehicles or public transportation to reach the finish line. While the Sports Institute of Mexico City, the event’s organizer, did not officially confirm the numbers, it has assured the public that it is diligently working to identify and penalize those who displayed an “unsportsmanlike attitude” during the marathon by invalidating their registration time.

According to ESPN, the marathon has faced cheating controversies in the past, with approximately 6,000 runners disqualified in 2017 and 3,000 in 2018. The institute reiterates that the marathon symbolizes not only a significant celebration for the city’s inhabitants but also an opportunity to reinforce the essential values of the sport.

The recent allegations of cheating have resurfaced a notorious cheating scandal from 2007 involving former presidential candidate Roberto Madrazo, as reported by the New York Times. Madrazo, who had prominently featured his marathon-running achievements in his political campaign advertisements, claimed victory in the men’s category for his age group in the Berlin Marathon but was ultimately disqualified for cheating. Organizers conducted an investigation after a photographer provided them with images of Madrazo wearing a jacket and cap while other participants were clad in sweat-soaked shorts and t-shirts. Upon examining the tracking chip, it became evident that Madrazo had taken shortcuts to gain an unfair advantage. This recent incident has brought renewed attention to this historic scandal, capturing the interest of the public once again. (Read more marathon stories.)
