At least 20 people, including two children, tragically lost their lives when a bus veered off an overpass near Venice, Italy, on Tuesday evening, according to authorities.
Venice Mayor Luigi Brugnaro informed Italian state TV channel Rai News24 that the bus had veered off the road and fallen a few meters close to railway lines in Mestre, a suburb of Venice. The bus caught fire after the crash near the railway tracks.
“We have confirmed at least 20 fatalities, but there are still individuals trapped in the wreckage,” stated Brugnaro.
According to a Venice official, the bus was carrying foreign tourists, including some individuals from Ukraine.
“The people on the bus found themselves surrounded by flames,” stated Mauro Luongo, commander of the Venice firefighters team. “The scene we encountered was horrific. It took approximately one hour to extract some of the bodies.”
Venice prefect Michele Di Bari confirmed that there were 15 survivors from the crash.

Renato Boraso, an official from the city of Venice, said that four of the injured individuals were in serious condition following the accident, which occurred just 9 km (3.7 miles) northwest of Venice’s historic city center. Michele Di Bari, the Venice prefect, noted that two of the victims were children.
The injured individuals were transported to five different hospitals in the region.
