Shocking Brussels Terror Attack: 2 Swedish Citizens Tragically Lost their Lives

In what is being investigated as a terror attack, two Swedes were fatally shot in central Brussels on Monday. The Belgian capital has raised its terror alert level to the highest level, as reported by the BBC. A video posted on social media features a man speaking in Arabic claiming to be a member of Islamic State and carrying out the attacks in the name of Allah, according to Reuters. The shootings occurred about 3 miles away from a stadium where 35,000 people were assembled to watch a Belgium-Sweden soccer game. The AP reports that the game, a Euro 2024 qualifier, was abandoned midway through.

After the cancellation of the soccer game, fans were instructed to remain in the stadium. Laura Demullier from Belgium’s OCAD anti-terror center emphasized the importance of safely evacuating the fans, as reported by the Guardian. She urged residents of Brussels to stay alert and avoid unnecessary travel. Belgian Prime Minister Alexander de Croo expressed his condolences to his Swedish counterpart on X, stating, “Our thoughts are with the families and friends who lost their loved ones. As close partners, the fight against terrorism is a collective effort.” (Read more Belgium stories.)
