Sheriff’s Deputy Allegedly Involved in Attempt to Conceal Colleague’s Crash

Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón announced on Wednesday that criminal charges have been filed against an off-duty Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy. The deputy allegedly attempted to cover up a fellow off-duty deputy’s involvement in a patrol vehicle crash last summer in Stevenson Ranch.

The accused deputy, Gregory Davis, who is 54 years old, will be arraigned on September 27 at the downtown Los Angeles courthouse. He faces one felony count of conspiracy to obstruct justice, one misdemeanor count of giving false information to a peace officer, and three misdemeanor counts of delaying and/or obstructing an investigation.

The District Attorney’s Office states that Davis allegedly removed the off-duty deputy from the patrol SUV after the crash on August 26. He then placed the injured deputy in the vehicle of his colleague’s wife, who drove him home.

Prosecutors claim that Davis, who is part of a specialized unit, attempted to move the patrol SUV before an off-duty Los Angeles Police Department officer, who happened to be passing by, contacted the authorities. Davis did not initially identify himself as an off-duty deputy during the incident.

The other deputy involved in the incident, Carlos Lopez, was previously charged with driving under the influence. Lopez is awaiting a pretrial hearing on October 17 in East Los Angeles.

Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón stated, “A law enforcement officer obstructing an investigation into unlawful conduct by another deputy undermines the integrity of the justice system. We will hold accountable both the officer who committed misconduct and those who participated in covering it up. No one is above the law, especially not those that are sworn to uphold it.”

The employment status of the two sheriff’s deputies is currently unknown. The charges against Davis resulted from an investigation conducted by the sheriff’s Internal Criminal Investigations Bureau and the District Attorney’s Office’s Justice System Integrity Division.
