“Shakira Faces Second Tax Evasion Allegation: Owes $9.5M” – National Reports

While it may appear that celebrities have unlimited funds, the Spanish government has accused Shakira of concealing her income.

Barcelona prosecutors announced new charges against the singer on Tuesday, claiming that she failed to pay 6.7 million euros (over C$9.5 million) in taxes on her 2018 income.

This is the second time that the 46-year-old has faced accusations of tax evasion in Spain.

According to The Associated Press, officials allege that Shakira used an offshore company based in a tax haven to evade taxes in Spain. Prosecutors also claim that the Grammy-winning singer did not report millions of euros earned from advance payments for her El Dorado World Tour in 2018.

Shakira has not publicly commented on the new tax allegations against her. She was reportedly informed of the charges while residing in Miami.

An investigation into Shakira’s financial reporting in Spain began in 2018. She was charged with tax evasion later that year and accused of owing over 14.5 million euros (about C$20 million) from 2012 to 2014.

Prosecutors argued that since Shakira spent more than half of the 2012 to 2014 period in Spain, she was required to pay taxes in the country, despite not officially residing there.

When originally charged with tax evasion, Shakira’s representative stated that she always acted in accordance with the law and sought advice from top tax experts.

The new charges are part of a separate case that was opened in July 2023. The singer will go to trial in November.

Shakira has been connected to Spain since her relationship with retired soccer player Gerard Pique. The couple, who share two children, resided together in Barcelona until their separation last year after 11 years together.

In recent years, Spanish tax authorities have cracked down on soccer stars like Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo for failing to pay their full tax obligations. Although found guilty of tax evasion, these players avoided prison time due to a provision that allows judges to waive sentences under two years for first-time offenders.
