Several individuals saved from Ecuador’s cable car, ranked as one of the planet’s loftiest

Dozens of people were rescued after being trapped for nearly 10 hours on one of the world's highest tourist cable cars in Ecuador's capital Quito.

Dozens of individuals were successfully rescued in the early hours of Friday after being trapped for almost 10 hours on one of Quito, Ecuador’s highest tourist cable cars.

A total of 75 people were safely brought to the ground through an operation conducted by the firefighters and the police, according to a statement released by the municipality of Quito.

The visitors were stranded for nearly 10 hours due to an electrical malfunction that paralyzed the system.

The statement mentioned that 48 individuals were rescued from the uppermost terminal of the system, which is situated at an altitude of approximately 4,000 meters (13,120 feet).

Subsequently, 17 people were rescued from the gondolas stuck on the line, while the system restarted and another 10 individuals made it safely to the ground.

The cable car covers a distance of 2.5 kilometers (1.5 miles) between two terminals, with the lowest one located at an altitude of 3,100 meters above sea level.

Video footage shared on the municipality’s Twitter account depicted the process of abseiling people to safety from the gondolas. It also showcased passengers, including children, emerging from the cabins and being wrapped in emergency blankets upon reaching the ground.
