Senate report reveals tax preparers’ data breach with Meta, Google

Tax preparation companies have been accused of sharing personal customer data with Meta, the parent company of Facebook, and Google, according to a report released by lawmakers. The report states that TaxAct, H&R Block, and Tax Slayer used pixels, a form of computer code, to transmit data to Meta and Google. The investigation followed a previous report that claimed the tax filing websites were sending users’ financial information to Facebook. The lawmakers’ investigation discovered that TaxAct collected more information than initially reported, including taxpayers’ filing status, refund amount, dependent names, and federal tax owed. The Meta Pixel tool also shared full names, email addresses, phone numbers, and addresses. H&R Block and TaxSlayer were also found to have shared extensive data through the Meta Pixel tool. The lawmakers have called for a full investigation into the matter and are urging for the prosecution of any companies or individuals who violated the law. The report criticized both the tax prep companies and tech firms for their reckless data sharing practices. Meta responded by stating that advertisers should not send sensitive information through their Business Tools and claimed their system filters out potentially sensitive data. Spokespeople for TaxAct, H&R Block, TaxSlayer, and Google have not yet responded to requests for comment. H&R Block stated that they take client privacy seriously and have implemented measures to prevent information sharing via pixels.
