Democrats on the House Oversight Committee have raised concerns about the promotion of a “whistleblower” by Republicans who has been charged with serious crimes. In a letter to committee Chair James Comer (R-Ky.), Reps. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) and Dan Goldman (D-N.Y.) expressed their worry that the committee had been manipulated by an individual accused of acting as an unregistered agent for the Chinese government. Raskin and Goldman stated that this individual, while a fugitive from justice, attempted to bolster his defense by making baseless and potentially false allegations through Congress.
The alleged whistleblower, Gal Luft, an Israeli-American dual citizen, has claimed to possess compromising information about President Joe Biden and his son Hunter. Federal prosecutors recently unsealed an eight-count indictment against Luft, who is accused of being involved in illegal activities. The charges center around Hunter Biden’s consulting work for a Chinese energy conglomerate called CEFC China Energy in 2017 and 2018.
Luft, who also worked for CEFC, allegedly recruited and influenced former CIA director James Woolsey to make statements favorable to China. Woolsey briefly served as an advisor to former President Donald Trump. Luft was arrested in February, released, and has since evaded capture. He claims that the charges against him are an attempt to obstruct his testimony to the Oversight Committee.
Despite the charges against Luft, Comer, the committee chair, pointed out that both Luft and Hunter Biden worked for the same foreign principal. He argued that if Luft is untrustworthy for his association with CEFC, then so are the Bidens. In response, Raskin and Goldman have requested Comer to investigate if he was deceived by Luft and to provide any materials received from him. They have also raised concerns that Luft’s actions may be influenced by China’s efforts to undermine U.S. security interests.
Comer, in turn, suggested that Democrats have been either deceived by the Bidens or intentionally misleading the American people. He called for an examination of the FBI’s interview with Luft to verify his claims about the Bidens. The back-and-forth between the Democrats and Republicans on the committee highlights the complex dynamics surrounding this whistleblower and the ongoing investigation.
