Second US submarine arrives in South Korea, prompting North Korea to launch 2 missiles

North Korea strategically launched two short-range ballistic missiles into the sea off its east coast on Monday, in response to the recent arrival of a U.S. nuclear-powered submarine in South Korea.

This development occurs at a time of heightened tensions between Washington and Pyongyang. The submarine that arrived on Monday is the second significant U.S. vessel deployed to South Korea. It follows another vessel that docked last week, which possesses the capability to fire nuclear ballistic missiles.

According to South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff, the latest missiles were fired consecutively shortly before midnight from a location near North Korea’s capital. Both missiles traveled approximately 248 miles before landing in the waters off the eastern coast of the Korean Peninsula.

South Korea’s military has strongly condemned these launches, deeming them a “grave provocation” that poses a threat to regional peace and stability. U.S. and South Korean intelligence officials are now working together to analyze the launches and enhance monitoring of North Korean military activities.

This apparent act of retaliation by North Korea marks the third round of weapons testing since last week. In response to the arrival of the nuclear-capable U.S. submarine in South Korea, Pyongyang fired test ballistic missiles and cruise missiles.

The North Korean defense minister even issued a threat, stating that the docking of the nuclear-capable submarine could justify North Korea’s use of nuclear weapons.

Earlier on Monday, the U.N. Command confirmed that discussions had begun with North Korea regarding U.S. Army Pvt. Travis King, who crossed the border into North Korea last week and was subsequently detained. While U.S. officials have expressed concern for his well-being, U.N. officials have refrained from disclosing any information about his condition.
