Sean Foreman of 3OH!3 Co-Writes Ariana Grande’s Hit Song ‘Tattooed Heart’

Ariana Grande’s debut album, “Yours Truly,” is celebrating its 10th anniversary this month. One of the standout tracks on the album, “Tattooed Heart,” was co-written by Sean Foreman, one-half of the punk-pop duo 3OH!3. Foreman recently spoke to Insider about how this unexpected collaboration came to be.

Astoundingly, Grande, who was known for her innocent image and doo-wop style at the time, decided to work with Foreman, whose claim to fame was the provocative lyric, “You tell your boyfriend if he says he’s got beef / That I’m a vegetarian and I ain’t fucking scared of him.” This collaboration occurred when Grande was still primarily known for her role as Cat Valentine on the Nickelodeon shows “Victorious” and “Sam & Cat.” On the other hand, Foreman had gained popularity as part of 3OH!3, an electro-punk duo named after their Colorado area code, and had achieved success with their single “Don’t Trust Me.”

Foreman admitted that he wasn’t familiar with Grande’s work on Nickelodeon, but he was open to collaborating with her. The idea for “Tattooed Heart” initially came from a simple concept Foreman had written in his Notes app. Despite the initial setbacks during their studio session, Foreman and Grande connected over the idea of a throwback doo-wop sound, which greatly inspired the song’s creation. Foreman praised Grande’s talent and described the writing process as one of the most organic experiences he had ever had.

Upon the release of “Yours Truly,” “Tattooed Heart” quickly became a fan-favorite, garnering more Spotify streams than some of Grande’s more high-profile duets. It remains one of Grande’s most beloved songs to this day and has been performed at prestigious events such as the American Music Awards and at the White House for the Obama family. To commemorate the album’s 10th anniversary, Grande will be releasing a series of performance videos, including one for “Tattooed Heart.”

Foreman revealed that he had no idea if the song would even make it onto the album, as he received no updates after their studio session. However, against all odds, “Tattooed Heart” made it onto the tracklist and has stood the test of time. Foreman expressed his belief that the success of the song stemmed from both his and Grande’s genuine desire to create something they loved, rather than aiming for a commercial hit.

For Foreman, the moment of conception and creation is the most fulfilling as a songwriter. After that, he understands that it’s up to the song to live its own life and make its mark on the world.
