Prepare for an unexpected twist, even Ghostface couldn’t see it coming. The “Scream” franchise was hit with a creative roadblock this week after losing two stars, leaving the seventh film in the series in flux, sources familiar with the project reveal.
News that Variety broke broke the news of Melissa Barrera’s firing by Spyglass, the film’s producer, over social media messages that the company deemed antisemitic has sent shockwaves. The departure of Jenna Ortega, who would not return due to a scheduling conflict, further complicates the situation. And as if that wasn’t enough, backlash to Barrera’s ouster has been intense, with the film’s director Christopher Landon reacting to her exit, posting and deleting a statement.
Plans for the next “Scream” were already being retooled before Barrera’s firing. Further changes are expected as the writers of the previous two “Scream” installments work on a fresh draft to present to filmmakers, ensuring the next gruesome chapter is prepared for the big screen. As the plot thickens, a roster of other surviving characters will step into the limelight, potentially including Neve Campbell and Courteney Cox, the original stars of the series.
Amid all the drama, the hope for “Scream 7” to hit theaters in 2025 still seems feasible. If the team can concoct another terrifying story, the franchise will be ready to captivate audiences once again. All it takes is a chillingly good idea.
