Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman stated in an interview with Fox News’s Bret Baier that if Iran were to acquire a nuclear weapon, his country would feel compelled to do the same. Bin Salman emphasized that acquiring nuclear weapons would be necessary for security reasons and to maintain a balance of power in the Middle East. However, he also expressed a desire to avoid such a scenario.
The Crown Prince voiced his concerns about any country obtaining nuclear weapons, particularly Iran. He described it as a detrimental move and stressed the inherent dangers of deploying nuclear weapons. Bin Salman argued that any country using such a weapon would effectively declare war on the rest of the world. He emphasized the world’s collective responsibility to prevent another catastrophic event like Hiroshima, stating that the loss of 100,000 lives would signify a global war.
Meanwhile, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi demanded that the United States demonstrate its commitment to the 2015 nuclear deal, which former President Trump had withdrawn from in 2018. The Biden administration had previously engaged in talks to renegotiate the agreement but has not shown a renewed interest in resuming discussions.
