Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, Undergoes Surgery to Treat Breast Cancer

Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York and former spouse of Prince Andrew, the disgraced son of Queen Elizabeth II, revealed on her podcast that she had undergone a single mastectomy following a breast cancer diagnosis. In an episode of “Tea Talks With the Duchess & Sarah,” her new weekly podcast co-hosted by entrepreneur Sarah Thomson, she disclosed receiving the diagnosis after a routine mammogram. Although the exact date of her operation was not mentioned, the podcast was recorded the day before it was scheduled to take place. Surprisingly, Ms. Ferguson did not display any symptoms or discover a lump.

Ms. Ferguson, 63, emphasized the importance of openly discussing her experience, especially considering her family history with cancer, as both her father and stepfather succumbed to the disease. She urged all listeners to undergo regular check-ups in her attempt to raise awareness.

Routine mammograms are offered by Britain’s National Health Service to women over 50. In the United States, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force issued new guidelines this year recommending breast cancer screening for all women starting at age 40, as opposed to the previous threshold of 50.

The Duchess’s surgery was successful, and her prognosis is positive, according to a spokesperson cited by The Associated Press. She was discharged from King Edward VII’s Hospital in London, known for its care of the British royal family.

Ms. Ferguson has long been involved with the Teenage Cancer Trust, an organization in Britain dedicated to supporting young cancer patients. Back in 1990, she inaugurated the trust’s inaugural cancer unit in a London hospital, as reported on their website. Her motivation to join cancer charities stemmed from the loss of her stepfather at the age of 50.

The Duchess married Prince Andrew in 1986 at Westminster Abbey but divorced after a decade. Surprisingly, they continue to share a residence in Windsor, raising their two daughters, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, as well as three grandchildren.

Often referred to as “Fergie,” Sarah Ferguson has consistently made headlines in British newspapers, which extensively covered her weight, love life, divorce, and her exclusion from Prince William and Kate Middleton’s wedding in 2011. However, she has experienced a resurgence, having published historical novels, a children’s book, and launching her own podcast.

Addressing her recent diagnosis, Ms. Ferguson stated that her primary focus now is on achieving optimal fitness and health. She admitted that she has no other option but to go through the operation and remain strong and well.
