Sailor Activates Emergency Alert after Boat Encounter with Orcas Lasts 30 Minutes off Portugal’s Coast

A sailor has an extraordinary tale to share after a group of killer whales launched an assault on his boat along the Portuguese coast.

On August 7th, while sailing near Cape Vincent, Portugal, Phep Philouceros found himself being trailed by a pack of five orcas as he navigated his 30-foot vessel.

The 70-year-old seafarer was en route to Royan, France when two of the orcas broke away from the pod and aggressively attacked his boat, according to a report from SWNS.

Despite his 55 years of sailing expertise, Philouceros could do nothing to deter the orcas, even after attempting maneuvers such as turning off the engine and reversing the boat.

“Unfortunately, I wasn’t fortunate.”

When a rescue boat arrived 15 minutes later, the orcas persisted in their attack, even going after the boat’s rudder, as reported by SWNS.

Philouceros was eventually towed back to Sagres, Portugal, with the orcas continuing their assault.

Philouceros, who had set sail from Gruissan, France, three months prior, had been aware of orca sightings near Sagres. He used an app called Orca Atlantica to monitor sightings and listened to advice from local authorities.

However, on that fateful day, there were no recorded orca sightings in Sagres, leading Philouceros to proceed with his sail.

“Unfortunately, luck wasn’t on my side,” he lamented.

Philouceros speculated that the attacking orcas were young, measuring only about 20 feet in length.

“The orcas could have easily sunk the boat, but they seemed more interested in playing,” he said.

This unprecedented encounter with orcas left Philouceros shaken but grateful that the attack did not result in capsizing.
