LAPD Officer Taken Into Custody for Theft and Burglary Offenses

A Los Angeles Police Department officer was apprehended on Tuesday after his fellow officers recognized him as the individual who had used a stolen debit card at a home improvement store. Edmond Babaians, a 42-year-old officer from the Custody Services Department, which oversees city jails, was taken into custody by the internal affairs unit on a felony warrant, according to the Los Angeles Times. The incident came to light when a woman reported her missing debit card and unauthorized transactions from her account following a visit to a department facility. Security system photos provided by the woman indicated that someone had used her stolen card.

Babaians, a veteran of the force with 16 years of service, was released on his own recognizance after being arrested for theft and burglary charges. The LAPD has relieved him of his police powers and placed him on “assigned home” status as reported by KTLA. LAPD Chief Michel Moore expressed deep concern regarding the allegations of an officer betraying public trust and called for accountability, according to ABC7. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass also issued a statement, commending the LAPD for swift action and emphasizing the importance of transparency and accountability to foster trust with the citizens.
