MANILA, Philippines — In an outstanding start to the 2023-24 B.League season, Carl Tamayo led defending champion Ryukyu to an 80-63 victory over Saga on Thursday at Saga Arena.

Tamayo showcased his skills by sinking all four of his three-point shots, finishing the game with 15 points, five rebounds, and two blocks in 40 minutes of play. This impressive performance marks the beginning of his second season in Japan.

The University of the Philippines standout had a breakout game in the B.League after playing only 16 games and scoring a total of 40 points in his rookie year with the Golden Kings.

During the game, Tamayo, a member of Gilas Pilipinas, contributed eight points in the first half as Ryukyu took a 44-34 lead. The team pulled away in the second half, securing their first win of the season.

Standing at 6-feet-7, Tamayo made the most of his two seasons in the UAAP, leading the University of the Philippines to back-to-back finals appearances. In Season 84, he ended UP’s 36-year title drought, and in the second tournament of 2022, he settled for silver.

Aside from Tamayo, Vic Law played a crucial role in Ryukyu’s victory with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Ryuichi Kishimoto scored 14 points, while Yoshiyuki Matsuwaki added 13 points.

The reigning B.League champion looks forward to securing their second win against Saga on Saturday.

In other news, Filipino imports Kai Sotto, AJ Edu, Matthew Wright, Ray Parks Jr., Dwight Ramos, Thirdy Ravena, and RJ Abarrientos will also be making their season debuts this weekend.
