Ryan Gosling’s Pull-up Challenge: The Unexpected Addition to ‘Barbie’

  • During the filming of “Barbie,” personal trainer David Higgins challenged the cast with pull-up, push-up, and plank exercises.
  • Ryan Gosling was so enthusiastic about the pull-up challenge that he incorporated it into the film.
  • Gosling emerged as the winner of the pull-up challenge, while Simu Liu claimed first place in the push-up challenge.

Ryan Gosling’s dedication to his role as Ken in “Barbie” extended to his intense training in the gym.

According to David Higgins, a personal trainer who worked with the “Barbie” cast during filming, Gosling even incorporated one of the cast’s workout challenges into the film.

In a recent interview with Insider, Higgins shared his favorite behind-the-scenes memories of working with the “Barbie” cast. He revealed that the cast trained together six days a week and fostered a camaraderie-filled atmosphere.

The atmosphere turned competitive during Higgins’ workout challenges, which included pull-ups, push-ups, and planks. According to Higgins, the cast was motivated by the desire to avoid being the first to drop.

Gosling became highly invested in the pull-up challenge and even jokingly declared, “I’m going to absolutely smash these guys,” as revealed by Higgins.

“It was a fun and competitive environment for everyone involved,” said Higgins. “The workout sessions became shirtless and showcased our muscles.”

Gosling emerged as the winner of the pull-up challenge, and his competitive spirit inspired a scene in the film. Higgins disclosed that the pull-up challenge was integrated into the movie, specifically in a scene where Gosling performs a pull-up shirtless, wearing a fur coat. Gosling’s co-star, Nicola Coughlan, shared in a British Vogue interview that she witnessed the filming of that scene and it became a cherished memory.

While Gosling excelled in the pull-up challenge, he didn’t emerge victorious in every workout competition. Simu Liu, who also portrayed one of the Kens in “Barbie,” claimed first place in the push-up challenge, and Margot Robbie held the longest plank, surpassing Gosling by over a minute.

Higgins utilized the challenges not only to inspire the cast but also to track their weekly progress. The Kens engaged in four days of strength and conditioning and two days of Pilates per week, while the Barbies followed the opposite routine.

Prior to each workout, Higgins incorporated core-focused ab exercises to activate the cast members’ core muscles. He emphasized the importance of core engagement at the beginning of the session to prevent injuries and promote longevity.

“I come from a Pilates background, so for me, core engagement is crucial at the start of any workout,” Higgins explained. He further added, “Although the aesthetic value is not the primary focus, it does come as a result of targeting the core muscles and integrating them into every aspect of our training.”
