Russian Plot to Kill Defector in Florida Exposed

An upcoming book by Calder Walton, a Harvard scholar of national security and intelligence, reveals a plot by Vladimir Putin’s regime to send a “modern-day Mercader” to assassinate a Russian defector in Florida. This plot is reminiscent of the assassination of Leon Trotsky by Ramon Mercader on orders from Josef Stalin nearly 80 years ago. The book, titled “Spies: The Epic Intelligence War Between East and West,” details how Moscow attempted to track down Aleksandr Poteyev, who had provided crucial information leading to the dismantling of a ring of sleeper agents in the US in 2010.

According to the book, which has been corroborated by the New York Times, Russian operatives pressured a Mexican scientist with ties to Russia to gather information on Poteyev’s whereabouts. However, the scientist, Hector Alejandro Cabrera Fuentes, failed to go unnoticed by security when he attempted to enter the complex where Poteyev resided by tailgating another vehicle. Cabrera Fuentes was apprehended two days later while trying to fly to Mexico, and US Customs and Border Protection agents found a photo of Poteyev’s vehicle on his phone.

The Justice Department has stated that Cabrera Fuentes admitted to acting on orders from Russia. Former intelligence officials claim that the plot to assassinate Poteyev resulted in reciprocal expulsions of Russian and American diplomats in 2021. Putin, who is known for his tough stance against defectors, has been regarded as dangerously escalating by orchestrating a plot to kill a defector on US soil. Former CIA officer Marc Polymeropoulos states, “The red lines are long gone for Putin. He wants all these guys dead.”
