Russian Drone Attack Jolts Kyiv: A Shocking Disturbance in the City’s Peace

KYIV — Russia unleashed a ferocious onslaught of explosive drones on Kyiv and other targets early Saturday, breaking a weeks-long period of relative calm in the Ukrainian capital and deepening its somber mood.

Ukraine’s military reported that 74 out of 75 Iranian-made Shahed drones were destroyed by air defenses during a six-hour assault, with dozens of the drones targeting Kyiv in what the city’s mayor called the largest drone attack since Russia’s invasion in February 2022.

Although every unmanned craft bound for Kyiv was intercepted and destroyed, falling debris caused damage by striking a kindergarten, sparking fires, and injuring five people, including an 11-year-old child, according to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko’s post on Telegram.

The day saw more activity than any day in recent weeks or months, serving as a reminder of the inevitable tough times ahead — with many Ukrainians bracing themselves for anticipated attacks on civilian infrastructure throughout the winter. In Kyiv, that fear had been simmering beneath an eerie calm in recent weeks.
