Exclusive Interview: Wale Shares Insights on New Music and Aid for Students Battling Food Insecurity

Rapper Wale is making his return to music and social media, and he’s doing it with a mission close to his heart. Wale is teaming up with PepsiCo to fight food insecurity at historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), which played a significant role in the start of his career.

PepsiCo is generously donating $250,000 in grants, with each of the five selected HBCUs receiving $50,000, to support over 37,500 students who often struggle to afford their education and daily meals.

The HBCUs benefiting from these grants are Morgan State University, Prairie View A&M University, Jackson State University, Florida A&M University, and Bethune-Cookman University. Wale and Pepsi personally delivered the first two checks at the Florida Classic, a major football event between Florida A&M and Bethune-Cookman.

Wale, who attended Bowie State University, Virginia State University, and Robert Morris University, has personal ties to HBCUs, and he is deeply committed to supporting the cause.

1. Why did this particular mission mean a lot to you with helping with food insecurity?

Contribution to HBCUs is in my DNA. These institutions play a significant role in shaping future leaders, and it’s vital that the students have access to proper nourishment. It’s important for me to be involved with HBCUs and support their efforts, and I have future plans to further engage with activities that highlight HBCUs.

2. You’re finally returning after a two-year hiatus. In October, you dropped your track “Max Julien.” What other new music can we expect from you soon?

“BLOOD ON THE DANCE FLOOR” is my latest track that recently reached number one in Nigeria. It holds special significance to me because it’s my first number one in Nigeria. I have been keen on collaborating with Nigerian artists and emphasizing that during my time at Atlantic Records.

3. You just mentioned Atlantic, tell me about the move over to Def Jam. Was that something that you wanted to keep under wraps for a while and how has that experience been for you?

Def Jam is the epitome of hip-hop, and working with Tunji Balogun, the CEO, has been an exciting and fulfilling experience. It has been a significant career move for me, and I’m eager to continue my journey with Def Jam, a powerhouse in the music industry.
