Ukraine Battles in the Southern Kherson Region
An ongoing battle between Ukrainian and Russian forces is causing turmoil to the left bank of the Dnipro River in southern Kherson. The fluidity of the fight taking place has prompted an informational silence from Ukrainian’s defense forces. Officials from the Operational Command South have shared the struggles with the media, with a plea to keep their plans private for forcing the Russian forces to retreat as the invasion further unfolds.
Despite the challenge, the Russians have been relentless in their fight, making use of heavy artillery, rocket launchers, and aviation to defend themselves. The defense from Ukraine’s side stretches out along the coast from the water’s edge of the Dnipro River, fluctuating between 3 to 8 kilometers.
Meanwhile, workers on the ground continue to search for survivors near the city of Selydove, which has been attacked by Russian missiles. This destructive event has resulted in casualties and severe damage to the city, ranging from destroyed homes to injured civilians. However, Russia denies any targeting of civilians, despite continuous missile and drone attacks behind the front line.
Another significant aspect is the movement of Ukrainian forces positioning on the “Russian” side of the Dnipro river in Kherson. Moscow has admitted to this bold move made by the Ukrainian units, following the retreat of Russian forces from Kherson last year.
The wide displacement of Kherson is crucial for Ukrainian forces, as it represents a major component in the counteroffensive strategy that commenced in June. The impact of crossing the river signifies a tangible shift in the line of conflict, drawing attention to the region’s sensitivity for both Ukrainian and Russian forces.
