MOSCOW (AP) — The Russian military announced on Sunday the successful test launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) from a new nuclear submarine. This ICBM is specifically designed to carry nuclear warheads.
This report comes amidst rising tensions between Russia and the West due to the conflict in Ukraine. To further exacerbate these tensions, President Vladimir Putin recently signed a bill revoking Russia’s ratification of a global nuclear test ban. This move was justified by Moscow as a necessary step to achieve parity with the United States.
According to the statement released by the Russian Defense Ministry, the Imperator Alexander III strategic missile cruiser launched the Bulava missile successfully. The launch took place from an underwater position in Russia’s northern White Sea, with the missile hitting a target in the far-eastern region of Kamchatka. The exact timing of the test launch was not immediately disclosed.
The Imperator Alexander III is part of the new Borei-class nuclear submarines, each carrying 16 Bulava missiles. These submarines are expected to be the key naval component of Russia’s nuclear forces in the upcoming decades. As per the Defense Ministry, the ballistic missile launch serves as the final test for the vessel. Following this test, a decision will be made regarding its inclusion in the fleet.
The Russian navy currently operates three Borei-class submarines, with one undergoing final tests and three others under construction, as stated by the Defense Ministry.
