In a statement released on Saturday, the Russian Defense Ministry revealed that it had successfully taken down 20 Ukrainian drones over Crimea. They also intercepted two missile strikes on the Kerch Bridge, an important link between Crimea and mainland Russia. Thankfully, no casualties were reported from these attacks.
Out of the 20 drones, 14 were shot down while the other six were disabled using jamming techniques, according to Russian officials. This announcement follows an increase in Russian attacks on Ukrainian positions. The ministry reported that nine Ukrainian positions near Kupyansk were captured by Russian forces during Saturday morning’s clashes.
The Russian military, through its Telegram channel, claimed to have successfully defended their positions on Friday, resulting in the deaths of over 500 Ukrainian servicemen. According to Russia, the strikes destroyed armored vehicles, artillery positions, and a command post along the front lines. Additionally, 29 more Ukrainian drones were downed during the fighting on Friday.
The Kerch Bridge has been a frequent target of Ukrainian attacks, and recent strikes caused damage to an oil tanker near the bridge. These drone strikes in Crimea are seen as attempts to create unrest among the Russian population and turn them against the ongoing war.
Concerns have arisen about Ukraine’s ability to push back the Russian military before winter, as their counteroffensive has slowed down. Pentagon spokesperson Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder acknowledged the challenging nature of the conflict but assured continued support through consultation and training to help Ukraine reclaim its sovereign territory.
