Russia Shoots Down Ukrainian Drones and Missiles Following Attack on Kyiv | Latest Updates on Russia-Ukraine War

Russian air defences intercept Ukrainian drones over multiple regions inside its territory, including Moscow, just one day after a major attack on Kyiv.

Just a day after Kyiv reported the “largest drone attack” on Ukraine since Moscow invaded the country in February last year, Russian air defences have intercepted Ukrainian drones over several regions within its territory, including Moscow.

Russia’s Ministry of Defence stated on Sunday that “air defence destroyed four Ukrainian drones over the territory of the Bryansk, Smolensk, and Tula regions.” Russia also reported shooting down some drones over the Moscow region.

Additionally, the Russian army claimed to have downed two Ukrainian missiles headed for Russia over the Sea of Azov, located between the two countries. On the other hand, Ukraine stated that its air defence had taken down eight out of nine drones over the country on Sunday.

Ukraine reported that Moscow had launched 75 drones into the country on Saturday, with most of them targeted at the capital. This attack coincided with Kyiv’s commemoration of Holodomor, the Soviet-engineered starvation tragedy that killed millions of Ukrainians during the Stalin era.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attack as an act of “willful terror,” accusing the Russian leadership of being proud of their ability to kill. Ukraine has been targeting Russian regions and the annexed Crimean Peninsula with drones for months, launching a counteroffensive this summer to push back Russian forces.

It is crucial to note that Russia annexed Crimea and supported separatists in eastern Ukraine after the pro-Moscow government of President Viktor Yanukovych was overthrown following a popular uprising in 2014.
