Russia launches a country-wide missile assault on Ukraine

Russian Forces Unleash Missiles on Ukraine, Inflicting Casualties and Damaging Infrastructure

KYIV, Ukraine – Early Tuesday morning, Russian forces launched a barrage of missiles on Ukraine, resulting in civilian casualties and significant damage to infrastructure. These attacks came just hours before a security conference near Moscow, where top Russian military officials and their allies from Asia, the Middle East, and Africa were gathering.

The missile strikes targeted cities across Ukraine, extending beyond the front lines where Ukrainian forces are battling entrenched Russian troops to reclaim occupied territory. Moscow has fortified the more than 1,000-kilometer (600-mile) front line, limiting Ukraine’s progress since its counteroffensive in June.

Presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak condemned the attacks on civilians, highlighting their deliberate nature and their purpose of inducing fear and psychological pressure on the population.

One of the missile strikes hit the western region of Lviv, causing 19 injuries, including a 10-year-old child. Lviv Governor Maksym Kozytskyi reported damages to the power grid and nearly 120 residential buildings. Additionally, a missile attack on a SKF factory in Lutsk, north of Lviv, claimed the lives of three employees. In the east of Ukraine, a food warehouse was struck by Russian forces, resulting in one fatality. The city of Smila in central Ukraine witnessed another strike, leading to a water supply disruption and damage to a medical facility.

The previous day, Russian forces launched a series of missile and drone strikes on Odesa, a city in southwestern Ukraine. The continuous attacks on Odesa have targeted grain transportation facilities and destroyed cherished historical sites. Moscow’s decision to halt the landmark agreement facilitating grain exports from Ukraine to Africa, the Middle East, and Asia has exacerbated the situation and increased the risk of hunger.

In a pre-recorded video message at a security conference near Moscow, Russian President Vladimir Putin accused the West of exacerbating the conflict by providing immense financial support, military equipment, and advisors to Kyiv. Putin alleged that this support was aimed at escalating the conflict and involving other nations in the region.

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu downplayed the significance of Western support for Ukraine, claiming that despite this aid, Kyiv’s forces have struggled to achieve favorable outcomes on the battlefield.

Sweden recently announced an aid package worth 3.4 billion kronor ($314 million), which includes ammunition for equipment previously provided as military assistance.
