Russia issues warning of strong retaliatory actions following drone attacks in Moscow and Crimea

Russia has issued a strong warning of “tough retaliatory measures” against Ukraine following a series of drone strikes in Moscow and Crimea early Monday morning.

The Russian Foreign Ministry reported that two unmanned combat aerial vehicles from Ukraine attempted to attack facilities in Moscow, but were successfully thwarted by radio-electronic warfare systems. Two nonresidential buildings were hit, but there were no casualties. In addition, a drone without explosives fell on a cemetery in the city of Zelenograd, according to the Russian Foreign Ministry.

In a separate incident, Russian authorities claimed that Kyiv launched drones in Russian-annexed Crimea, targeting an ammunition depot. This resulted in a traffic jam on a major highway and a railway crossing, causing damage to a private home. As a precaution, multiple villages within a three-mile radius of the depot were ordered to evacuate.

Ukraine has since claimed responsibility for the attacks, with Minister of Digital Transformation Mykhalio Fedoro suggesting that Russia is becoming increasingly incapable of protecting its own airspace. The Russian Foreign Ministry condemned Ukraine’s actions as resorting to terrorist methods and stated that it reserves the right to respond with tough measures.

The Investigative Committee of Russia has initiated criminal proceedings in connection with Monday’s attacks, as announced by the Russian Foreign Ministry.

This incident marks the second drone attack on Moscow this month, with a previous strike on July 4 resulting in the interception of five drones on the outskirts of the capital. The subsequent diversion of flights to other Moscow airports temporarily disrupted operations at Vnukovo airport.
