Moscow has initiated a massive missile and drone onslaught on western Ukraine as a response to a Ukrainian attack on a Russian tanker. Ukraine’s air force reported that Russia launched 70 attack drones and missiles, including cruise missiles from aircraft over the Caspian Sea. President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his dismay, stating that a guided bomb struck a blood-transfusion center in the Kharkiv region. The Russian barrage occurred following a Ukrainian drone attack on a Russian tanker in the Black Sea near Crimea. Earlier in the day, Ukraine had also targeted a major Russian port with drones. Maria Zakharova, a spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, condemned the Ukrainian “terrorist attack” on a civilian vessel in the Kerch Strait and stated that there is no justification for such barbaric actions. She added that the perpetrators of these actions will be punished.
Moreover, the city’s Moscow-appointed mayor reported that Ukrainian shelling in Russian-held Donetsk resulted in the death of an elderly woman in her 80s. Additionally, Moscow’s second-largest airport temporarily suspended flights after a thwarted drone attack near the Russian capital.
