Research finds that one in three people have been targeted by romance con artists.

The number of reported cases of this type of scam has significantly increased in recent years. According to a survey by Santander, 31% of adults have been approached by these tricksters.

This deceptive scheme involves fraudsters luring their victims into trusting online relationships, often through social media, and then extorting money from them.

On average, victims lose £2,331 to these scammers. Banks report that these types of scammers stole £31.3 million in 2022, but Action Fraud estimates that the actual figure is closer to £95 million per year.

Chris Ainsley, Santander’s Head of Fraud Risk, advises, “It’s important to question the authenticity of the romance, especially when financial matters arise. In addition to being cautious about sweet-talk, never send money to someone you’ve just met and consult a trusted friend or family member before making any payments.”
