RMS Titanic Plans Memorial Service for Titan Passenger Paul-Henri Nargeolet

  • The company that holds the salvaging rights to the Titanic is organizing a memorial for its former employee.
  • Unfortunately, Paul-Henri Nargeolet, who was one of the five passengers who died aboard the Titan submersible last month, will be remembered during the opening of the company’s new commercial exhibit.
  • Simultaneous to the opening of its new exhibit, RMS Titanic will be commemorating Nargeolet’s service.

RMS Titanic Inc., the controversial company that possesses the exclusive rights to salvage the famous shipwreck, will hold a live-streamed memorial service for Paul-Henri Nargeolet, their former employee and passenger on the Titan submersible. It is worth noting that this event coincides with the grand opening of the company’s newest Titanic-themed exhibit.

As part of the promotion for the new Paris-based exhibition, “Titanic – L’exposition,” RMS Titanic acknowledges Nargeolet’s significant contributions, as he and his dedicated team were responsible for recovering and displaying many of the artifacts found at the underwater gravesite.

In its announcement of the exhibit, RMS Titanic’s statement describes Nargeolet as an intrepid explorer with an indomitable pioneering spirit, highlighting his fearlessness in unravelling the ocean’s mysteries and educating the public.

RMS Titanic includes a quote from Nargeolet in its social media marketing for the exhibit, emphasizing that everyone should have the opportunity to dream about and experience the Titanic, rather than it being limited to a privileged few.

The memorial service for Nargeolet, organized by RMS Titanic, will take place after the exhibit’s opening. While it’s a private event, the company plans to live stream it on Facebook to allow the worldwide Titanic and Oceanographic communities to participate in remembering their colleague and expressing collective grief.

Nargeolet tragically lost his life alongside four others during an exploratory dive to the Titanic wreck aboard OceanGate’s Titan submersible, which experienced a presumed implosion.

Despite the heartache, Nargeolet’s family supports the new Titanic exhibit, with his daughter even speaking at a panel and expressing gratitude to RMS Titanic Inc. for enabling her father to pursue his passions.

Having spent two decades working with RMS Titanic Inc., Nargeolet played a crucial role in collecting over 5,000 artifacts from the wreckage during his numerous dives to the site.

Commenting on her father, Sidonie Nargeolet recalls his passion for sharing his discoveries and introducing others to his work.

David Concannon, a longtime friend of Nargeolet and a former legal advisor to both RMS Titanic Inc. and OceanGate, stated that he would not attend the company’s memorial service, preferring to participate in another service that he believes is more appropriate. Concannon also highlights the unfortunate timing of the Paris event, coming dangerously close to the opening of a commercial artifact exhibit.

RMS Titanic has not responded to Insider’s requests for comment, nor have they addressed prior interview requests in the past. The company has faced ongoing controversy due to its exclusive ownership of salvaging rights and its profit-driven approach to the historic shipwreck.

Following bankruptcy in 2016, RMS Titanic attempted to auction off its recovered artifact collection. However, the auction never materialized, and the company retains ownership of the collection to this day.
