Riyadh, Saudi Arabia selected as the host city for the 2030 World Expo

Saudi Arabia’s capital Riyadh won the bid to host the 2030 World Expo, focusing on a prosperous and sustainable future. This victory came after beating Rome and the South Korean city of Busan, securing an event expected to draw millions of visitors. The Bureau International des Expositions in Issy-les-Moulineaux voted 119 out of 165 in favor of Riyadh. Riyadh coveted the prestigious expo and will be working towards transforming its cityscape, aiming to boast a major public transit network and a futuristic, round space with e-game facilities, large performance stages, and sport venues. Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister, Prince Faisal bin Farhan, welcomed the vote, expressing that they are committed to living up to the expectations and delivering an extraordinary expo.

He added, “The legacy of Riyadh Expo 2030 will go beyond the buildings giving visitors a fantastic architecture and a shared pathway to prosperity for all of the countries of the world.” The expo aims to bring 40 million visitors to Riyadh, leading to intense campaign efforts by each city, showcasing unique visions, and ambitious promises to secure the rights to the prestigious event.

Saudi Arabia pushed forward its bid to host the event, featuring a “Riyadh 2030” exhibit near the Eiffel Tower and extensive advertising across Paris, receiving official support from French President Emmanuel Macron. Despite the accolades, there were activists’ objections regarding the allegations of human rights violations by Saudi Arabia.

The World Expo’s history carries significant importance, representing an opportunity for host cities to catalyze economic growth and global recognition. These events have showcased the latest technological innovations and cultural achievements, making them an essential platform for international cooperation and progress.
