Data from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reveals a concerning trend – the prevalence of obesity is on the rise nationwide.
A close examination of the CDC data, available here, indicates that in 2022, a total of 22 states had an obesity prevalence of over 35 percent. This represents an increase compared to the 17 states with similar prevalence rates in 2021, as shown in the document.
The CDC gathers this data through the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, an ongoing state-based telephone interview survey conducted by both the CDC and state health departments.
Dr. Karen Hacker, director of the CDC’s National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, acknowledges that obesity is influenced by a variety of factors, including eating habits, physical activity levels, sleep routines, genetics, and certain medications. As a result, there is no universal approach to tackling this disease, she explained in a statement to CNN.
Additionally, the survey uncovered geographical disparities in obesity prevalence within the United States. The Midwest region had the highest prevalence rate at 35.8 percent, followed closely by the South at 35.6 percent. The Northeast and West regions reported slightly lower rates of 30.5 and 29.5 percent, respectively.
In 2022, only the District of Columbia had an obesity prevalence percentage below 25 percent. Three states – Louisiana, Oklahoma, and West Virginia – have alarming obesity rates exceeding 40 percent, as reported by the CDC.
