Ricky Cobb II’s Fatal Shooting: Officials Release Bodycam Footage

  • A Minnesota state trooper fatally shot Ricky Cobb II during a traffic stop on July 31.
  • Bodycam footage reveals that the officers failed to explain to Cobb why he needed to exit the vehicle.
  • Cobb’s mother and local activists are demanding the termination of all three officers.

Newly released bodycam footage reveals that the three officers involved in the tragic shooting of Ricky Cobb II failed to provide him with a reason for exiting his vehicle before resorting to lethal force.

Ricky Cobb was shot and killed by police officer Ryan Londregan around 2 a.m. on July 31 during a traffic stop conducted by three state troopers in Minneapolis, Minnesota. While Cobb did not have an active arrest warrant, he was suspected of violating an order for protection, as stated by Col. Matt Langer during an August 1 press conference.

All three officers involved in the incident are currently on paid administrative leave, according to Langer.

The recently released bodycam footage depicts trooper Brett Seide approaching Cobb’s driver-side window without providing an explanation, while Londregan positioned himself by the passenger-side window.

When Cobb inquired about the need to exit the vehicle, Seide responded by stating, “I’m going to explain it all when you step out.”

Cobb, feeling concerned, asserted his right to consult with his attorney and refused to hand over his car keys as requested by Seide.

Despite the lack of clarity, Seide continued to insist on Cobb’s exit, repeating his earlier statement. Eventually, both Seide and Londregan forced open the doors of Cobb’s car.

Bodycam footage clearly shows Londregan aiming his gun at Cobb and ordering him to exit the vehicle once again. As Cobb started driving away, Londregan opened fire, resulting in his death.

According to the footage, the troopers obtained permission to pursue Cobb and later discovered his crashed car on a median. While administering medical attention, a third trooper named Garrett Erickson kept Cobb under gunpoint.

Nyra Fields-Miller, Cobb’s mother, expressed her desire for all three officers to be terminated in an interview with the Associated Press. She described her ongoing emotional distress and urged the officers to take responsibility for their actions.

Local activists, including Trahern Crews, a lead organizer for Black Lives Matter in Minnesota, are also calling for further disciplinary action against the officers. Crews emphasized the unjust nature of Cobb’s death, highlighting the dangers faced by Black individuals during routine encounters with law enforcement in Minnesota.
