Reviving the Impossible Mission: Tom Cruise’s Remarkable De-Aging in Dead Reckoning

  • The sequel of “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning” was close to featuring a de-aged Tom Cruise in a scene.
  • Director Christopher McQuarrie revealed that a younger version of Cruise almost appeared in the film’s original opening.
  • McQuarrie ultimately decided against it, fearing that the presence of young Cruise would overshadow the story.

Tom Cruise has portrayed superspy Ethan Hunt in the “Mission: Impossible” franchise for over 25 years. The upcoming 2023 movie, “Dead Reckoning Part One,” almost took audiences back to a time before they first encountered the beloved character in 1996.

In this installment, Hunt confronts a mysterious antagonist named Gabriel (Esai Morales) who has aligned himself with a powerful sentient artificial intelligence poised to bring about global chaos.

Director Christopher McQuarrie recently shared with GamesRadar that he initially planned to begin the film with a flashback set in 1989, with a de-aged Tom Cruise. However, McQuarrie ultimately abandoned the idea, concerned that it would overshadow the central storyline.

Audiences may recall a similar use of de-aging technology in “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” where a younger version of Harrison Ford battled Nazis in a 1940s-era sequence. Nevertheless, McQuarrie found that he became more fixated on the de-aging itself rather than the narrative while watching such scenes.

Regarding the possibility of utilizing de-aging technology on Cruise in a future film, McQuarrie stated that he had found a way to approach it effectively. However, the idea had been put on hold at that point. He also mentioned that it could still be explored in the future.

Potentially, “Dead Reckoning Part Two” will delve into the meeting between a young Hunt and Gabriel when the sequel hits theaters in 2024.
