Reviewing the Ultimate Wedding Planner: A Disheartening Revelation about the World’s Illusions | Television

I’m concerned that the new show, Ultimate Wedding Planner, which follows the UK edition of Alone, highlights the need for broadcasters to focus on showcasing genuine skills and talents rather than setting people up for failure. To address this, I believe that all channels should be required to air at least three shows each year that celebrate the real abilities of individuals. A cross-platform Basic Competence series could provide some relief from the frustrating content we often encounter.

Ultimate Wedding Planner features three judges: Fred Sirieix, known for his charisma on Channel 4’s First Dates; Sara Davies, a successful entrepreneur and Dragons’ Den dragon; and Raj Somaiya, the CEO of Silverfox Events. Despite the seemingly large number of contestants, there are actually only eight individuals who have been operating on the fringes of the wedding planning industry and are looking to establish themselves in the field.

The format of the show involves the contestants being given a challenging brief, a budget of £10,000, and only three days to fulfill the task. Each episode focuses on one couple who have already chosen and paid for the venue, with the BBC money serving to enhance their wedding experience. The series, spanning six weeks, is carefully edited to emphasize the contestants’ shortcomings, which can be frustrating to watch.

The participants are divided into two teams each week. One team focuses on the design elements, such as arranging decorations and ensuring clear signage, while the other team is responsible for creating a memorable experience for the attendees. This often involves planning where and how the alcohol will be served.

Personally, I found it challenging to watch more than 10 minutes of an episode due to the lack of common sense exhibited by some contestants. Statements like “I don’t think there is a rulebook!” or “I love to overplan!” accompanied by questionable decisions, such as using glue guns to attach fresh flowers to burlap, left me in need of a break.

The first couple featured on the show are planespotters who have chosen a hangar with Concorde as their venue. They desire an “intimate” wedding surrounded by a “floral wonderland” that evokes a sense of Concorde in a jungle. Although it may have been tempting to dismiss their request as nonsensical, Fred Sirieix challenges the contestants to make their dreams come true, adding an unexpected twist to the series. The second couple opts for a “rustic family festival vibe” and wants their farm’s pygmy goat to be the ring bearer. At this point, I couldn’t help but imagine them all being barbecued for the wedding breakfast. The third couple seeks a “champagne wedding on a lager budget,” hoping for an extravagant event on a limited budget.

As expected, there is the usual drama and competition among the contestants. Some excel in certain areas while lacking fundamental initiative, while others have fantastic ideas but struggle to execute them. Additionally, there are individuals who appear utterly incapable. At times, it becomes tempting to wish for unfortunate mishaps to befall them early in the process.

In conclusion, Ultimate Wedding Planner falls into the category of addictive yet meritless trash. It offers a love-hate relationship where you can simultaneously enjoy and despise the content. Ultimately, it leaves us questioning the authenticity and goodness of the world. As we lay in bed, we can only hope that tomorrow brings something different.
