Black Bear Spotted Slumbering in Bald Eagle Nest

An Alaska black bear found the perfect spot for some rest—a bald eagle nest.

During a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service eagle nest survey on July 17, a biologist spotted the bear snoozing high up in a tree at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, a military base in Anchorage. The agency later shared a photo of this picturesque scene on Facebook.

“At first, my mind was trying to make it into a baby eagle … perhaps with its wings spread or something,” said USFWS biologist Steve Lewis in an interview with McClatchy News. “Then I realized it was a small bear sleeping there.”

The nest measured about 6 feet wide, according to Lewis.

While the image is adorable, bears in eagle nests can be dangerous for the birds. The wildlife service mentioned in their Facebook post that black bears have been known to raid bald eagle nests, resulting in the death of young birds.

However, this bear is likely innocent. Lewis believes that the nest had already “failed” back in the spring before the bear discovered it.

It’s not entirely clear why the bear chose that particular spot to take a nap. Sometimes bears are attracted to the smells of old and uneaten food, such as fish, that can linger in nests. It’s also possible that the bear stumbled upon the nest by chance and found it comfortable, as Lewis mentioned in an interview with Live Science.

“It could have just happened to climb the tree and decided to take a nap,” he said.
