A new study has found that ear acupuncture, when combined with diet and exercise, can be effective in promoting weight loss. The study, presented at the European Congress on Obesity, was conducted by Takahiro Fujimoto and his team at Clinic F in Tokyo and published in BMJ Open Gastroenterology.

The research explores the use of metal beads for acupuncture stimulation on the outer ear as a simpler alternative to intradermal needles. According to Fujimoto, these tiny beads, when attached to specific points on the ear, stimulate nerves and organs that regulate appetite, satiety, and hunger. This method has been used in Japan for over 30 years and does not require extensive expertise.

Acupuncture is a fundamental practice in traditional Chinese medicine, which is based on the belief that health is dependent on the flow of energy (qi) in the body. Auricular acupuncture, specifically, is rooted in the concept that the outer ear represents all parts of the body. By placing thin needles or beads on certain points, disruptions or blockages in the flow can be resolved, potentially addressing various health conditions. This technique has also been employed in addiction treatment.

The study involved 81 overweight or obese Japanese men, ranging in age from 21 to 78, with an average body mass index (BMI) of 28.4 kilograms/meter. They received auricular acupuncture using 1.5-millimeter metal beads on both ears, which were secured with surgical tape to maintain consistent pressure on the acupuncture points. Over the course of three months, the participants were instructed to reduce their food intake by half. The results indicated that acupuncture, when combined with diet and exercise, can lead to weight loss by curbing cravings and appetite, improving digestion, and boosting metabolism.
