A coalition of Republican senators has penned a letter to President Biden, urging him to swiftly provide Ukraine with the necessary missiles to secure victory in its ongoing conflict with Russia. The letter, which was shared by Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) on X (formerly known as Twitter), argues that withholding the weapons will only prolong the war and result in further loss of life.
Joining Cotton in this request are Sens. Roger Wicker (R-Miss.), Susan Collins (R-Maine), and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C).
The letter states, “We urge you to immediately send MGM-140 Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS) to Ukraine. Additional delay will only further undermine U.S. national security interests and extend this conflict.”
According to the lawmakers, providing Ukraine with ATACMS would address a critical gap in their long-range fires capability.
The recent long-range strike on the Sevastopol naval port, carried out by Ukraine using weapons from the United Kingdom, highlighted the efficacy of such weapons and would enhance future counteroffensive operations, the senators asserted.
The senators emphasized the urgency of their appeal, noting that there are reportedly only 30 days left in the typical fighting season.
In support of their request, the Senate Armed Services Committee has unanimously approved an amendment to the 2024 National Defense Authorization Act, urging the Department of Defense to consider sending long-range missions to Ukraine.
“The U.S. is fully capable of providing these weapons without any appreciable risk to its own combat capability,” stated the letter.
In August, the U.S. government also announced a $200 million security assistance package for Ukraine. Since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, the federal government has already provided approximately $43 billion in aid.
