Pat Shurmur is set to make a comeback in college football. The former New York Giants head coach will join Deion Sanders’ coaching staff at Colorado, as reported by multiple sources.
Shurmur took a break from coaching in 2022 after his two-year stint as offensive coordinator with the Denver Broncos. Before that, he served as the Giants’ head coach from 2018 to 2019, ending his tenure with a 9-23 record in two years.
Shurmur brings over 20 years of NFL coaching experience to the Buffaloes’ staff. He was recently seen on the Colorado campus, according to 9News Colorado. Joining him on the coaching staff is former Minnesota Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer, who is entering his second season as an analyst under Sanders.
During his time as offensive coordinator with the Broncos, the team averaged just 20.2 points per game. However, Shurmur did earn AP NFL Assistant Coach of the Year honors in 2017 while serving as the Vikings’ offensive coordinator.
In addition to his NFL experience, Shurmur also has a background in college football. He previously worked as an assistant at Michigan State and was the offensive line coach at Stanford in 1998.
Sanders, who had a successful run at Jackson State with a 27-5 record in three seasons, has generated excitement among the Colorado fan base. The team has already seen a major overhaul, with 18 players entering the transfer portal.
Sanders, however, recently underwent surgery to remove blood clots in his legs. Despite that setback, the anticipation for his leadership and the addition of Shurmur to the coaching staff has energized the program.
