Reneé Rapp Opens Up About Experiencing Body-Shaming During Her Time In ‘Mean Girls’

Reneé Rapp received high praise from both critics and fans when she made her Broadway debut in “Mean Girls,” the stage adaptation of the popular film. However, she recently revealed in an interview with The Guardian that her experience behind the scenes was more challenging than it seemed.

During her time in the musical, Rapp was subjected to body-shaming comments by individuals involved with the production. Ironically, she was playing the role of Regina George, the leader of the “Plastics” clique known for making others feel inferior. Rapp didn’t disclose specific names, but she mentioned that people would say hurtful things about her body.

In addition to dealing with the pressures of the industry, Rapp was also privately struggling with an eating disorder. The situation became so overwhelming that her parents flew to New York to convince her to prioritize her health over the show. Ultimately, “Mean Girls” closed in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and never reopened.

Rapp is still working on developing a positive relationship with her body. She acknowledges that eating disorders are a lifelong battle and emphasizes the importance of being removed from harmful environments. Currently, she is focusing on her music career and recently released her debut album, “Snow Angel,” which is expected to be a top-selling pop debut by a female artist this year.

Fans of Rapp’s Broadway performance will be delighted to know that she will reprise her role as Regina George in the upcoming movie adaptation of the musical. Rapp believes that this version of “Mean Girls” will appeal to a wider audience, including those who may not typically be interested in theater.
